چکیده

Two-sex populations are usually studied through frequency-dependent models that describe how sex ratio affects mating, recruitment and population growth. However, in two-sex populations, mating and recruitment should also be affected by density and by its interactions with the sex ratio. Density may have positive effects on mating (Allee effects) but negative effects on other demographic processes. In this study, we quantified how positive and negative inter-sexual interactions balance in two-sex populations. Using a dioecious grass (Poa arachnifera), we established experimental field populations that varied in density and sex ratio. We then quantified mating success (seed fertilization) and non-mating demographic performance, and integrated these responses to project population-level recruitment. Female mating success was positively density-dependent, especially at female-biased sex ratios. Other demographic processes were negatively density-dependent and, in some cases, frequency-dependent. Integrating our experimental results showed that matefinding Allee effects dominated other types of density-dependence, giving rise to recruitment that increased with increasing density and peaked at intermediate sex ratios, reflecting tension between seed initiation (greater with more females) and seed viability (greater with more males). Our results reveal, for the first time, the balance of positive and negative inter-sexual interactions in sex-structured populations. Models that account for both densityand sex ratio dependence, particularly in mating, may be necessary for understanding and predicting two-sex population dynamics.

Backup Tapes, You Can’t Live With Them And You Can’t Toss Them: Strategies For Dealing With The Litigation Burdens Associated With Backup Tapes Under The Amended Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure

[1] The law in the federal courts governing whether litigants must disclose their backup tapes just changed. Faced with the cost, burdens and uncertainties of mining backup tapes, as well as other sources of data that are difficult to reach, most litigants have simply been ignoring their backup tapes. No more. The amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure adopt a new standard that embr...

Small Firms: Why Market-Driven Innovation Can’t Get Along Without Them

William Baumol1 has provided striking evidence indicating that private innovative activity has been divided by market forces between small firms and large, with each tending to specialize in a different part of the task.2 Even though the preponderance of private expenditure on research and development (R&D) is provided by the giant business enterprises, a critical share of the innovative breakt...

ارتباط بین سطوح سرمی تروپونین I و CRP با حساسیت بالا در بیماران پیوند کلیه

Background and Aim: Accompaniment of high serum levels of CRP to troponin increases the mortality rate in dialysis patients, and both of them are considered to be independent risk factors for uremic cardiomyopathy. In the present study, the relationship between serum troponin I and hs-CRP in renal transplant patients was investigated. Materials and Methods: This .study was conducted on 52 patie...

Lecture : Expanders , in theory and in practice ( 2 of 2 )

Here, we will describe how expanders are the metric spaces that are least like low-dimensional Euclidean spaces (or, for that matter, any-dimensional Euclidean spaces). Someone asked at the end of the previous class about what would an expander “look like” if we were to draw it. The point of these characterizations of expanders—that they don’t have good partitions, that they embed poorly in low...
